Tony Ponturo is a producer of Memphis, the new rock 'n' roll musical penned by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan. The show opened on Monday, October 19, 2009 at the Shubert Theatre, to a celebrity-filled audience including First Lady Michelle Obama. Set in the turbulent south in the 1950s, Memphis is the story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends race lines and airwaves. Thanks in part to his passionate persistence, "race" music reaches the center of the radio dial, quickly exploding throughout mainstream America. But when Huey falls for a beautiful black singer he has set on the path to stardom, whether the world is really ready for this music, and their love, is put to the test.
Memphis stars Chad Kimball (Huey Calhoun) and Montego Glover (Felicia Farrell).
Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) directed and Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys) choreographed the Broadway production.
Based on a concept by George W. George, Memphis features book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and a score and lyrics by Bon Jovi's David Bryan.
